Providers
             M. Stephen Mandell, Jr, MD, FACP, earned his BS from the University of Kentucky and continued there to receive his medical degree with honors.  He then completed his residency training at the Medical College of Virginia, serving afterwards as Chief Resident.  Dr. Mandell is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and is recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.  He is an active member of the medical staff of Mary Washington Hospital, having served as its President in the past, and he currently serves as the Chairman of several of its key clinical committees.

Dr. Mandell is recognized as an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in Health Sciences at James Madison University, providing clinical training for Physician Assistant students.  Additionally, he regularly instructs medical students from the Univeristy of Virginia during clinical rotations at the practice.
              
 
 
Antonio Valdes-Dapena, MD, received his medical degree from Temple University and then completed residency training in Family Practice at the Naval Hospital of Pensacola.  He is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.  After residency, he served for several years as a physician in the United States Navy prior to joining our practice.  Currently, he is a referring member of the medical staff at Mary Washington Hospital.

Dr. Dapena is recognized as an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in Health Sciences at James Madison University, providing clinical training for Physician Assistant students.  His special interests include Dermatology and Mental Health.  Additionally, he volunteers with a local student organization at Mary Washington University.
             
Daniel W. Woodford, MD/MPH, received a BS from Duke University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia.  He then completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia and is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.  Additionally, he earned a Masters of Public Health from Emory University.  Dr. Woodford is an active member of the medical staff of Mary Washington Hospital.

Special interests include Health Information Systems, continuity of care and rural health.  He also contributes to the clinical training provided to medical students from the University of Virginia at the practice.

                  Carole Spicer, PA-C, completed her undergraduate degree and her Masters of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Alderson-Broaddus College.  She is certified by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants, and she has a wealth of experience, having been employed as a Physician Assistant since 1977 and with this practice for over fifteen years.  Carole provides valuable clinical instruction to the Physician Assistant students that rotate to the practice from James Madison University.

Special interests include women's health, preventive care and healthy exercise.  Carole is active in the Association of Physician Assistants.
           
Mary Nichols, PhD, APRN, FNP-BC, earned her BSN from Seton Hall University (NJ), Master of Science from Adelphi University (NY) and PhD from University of Texas at Austin.  She completed a post-doctoral fellowship and Family Nurse Practitioner education at East Carolina University in 1997, and is an active member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners.  Mary is a Professor of Nursing at Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing providing Master's and Doctor of Nursing Science education for family and women's health nurse practitioner and nurse midwifery graduate students.  She has provided valuable clinical care on a part-time basis for our practice for many years.

Special clinical interests include women's health, pediatrics and health promotion/disease prevention for families.
